Dr R.M. Anjana, is the Managing Director of Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre and President of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. Her main research areas are prevention of diabetes, epidemiology, physical activity and translational research and metagenomics.
Dr. Anjana has played a pivotal role in groundbreaking epidemiological studies that have shaped diabetes care in India, contributing extensively to policy-making and public health strategies. She has been instrumental in developing innovative lifestyle intervention programs aimed at preventing diabetes and promoting metabolic health.
A passionate advocate for physical activity, she is the creator of THANDAV (Taking High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Dance to Adolescent Girls and Women for Victory over NCDs), an initiative designed to empower young girls and women through fitness and dance-based workouts to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Recognized globally for her research and leadership, Dr. Anjana has been published extensively in high-impact scientific journals, shaping the understanding of diabetes in South Asia. She actively engages in public awareness campaigns, digital health initiatives, and community outreach programs, making diabetes education and prevention more accessible.
Her contributions continue to transform diabetes care, integrating cutting-edge research with real-world applications, benefiting millions in India and beyond.
Dr. Anjana has been recognized with numerous awards and medals throughout her academic and professional career, including the Prof. S. Lakshminarayanan’s Gold Medal for the highest marks in her MD General Medicine University exam. She obtained a Diploma in Diabetology with distinction from the University of Cardiff (UK) in 2010 and a Ph.D. from Madras University in 2013. Dr. Anjana is a Fellow of several prestigious institutions, including the American College of Physicians (FACP), the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London, the Indian College of Physicians (FICP), and the American College of Endocrinology (FACE).
With over 250 published papers in esteemed national and international peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Anjana has also presented and lectured at numerous conferences on diabetes, non-communicable diseases, and cardiovascular epidemiology. Among her many accolades are the Dr. Leela Krishnamoorthy Award from the IABMS, the Boehringer-Knoll Junior Lectureship in Diabetes by the API, and the Young Outstanding Women Achievers Award by Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University. She has also received the Young Innovator Award at the Indo-UK Diabetes Summit, the Tamil Nadu Young Scientist Award, the E-MERCK Award, and the Novartis Young Investigator Award, among others.
Her contributions have been further recognized with the Healthcare Excellence Award, the Times Healthcare Achievers Award, the Kesavadev JPEF Award, and the RSSDI Fellowship Award. In 2020, she received the WIDF Applied Innovation Award and the K. V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator award. Most recently, she was honored with the Healthcare Personality Award 2020 by Medgate.
